Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Occurring once every four years, the Euro Cup has excellent drama for the world as soccer prepares to take center stage again. Last year Spain proved they could transfer their European Championship triumph into a World Cup victory, sparking more interest in the significance of this championship as an important precursor to the world stage.

This year Spain still stands a betting chance of winning, with strikers, Fernando Torres and David Villa in the squad. That combined with goalie Iker Casillas and midfielder Xabi Alonso, Spain is hoping to be the first country to win back to back European Championships and prove that they are still the best in world.

This should be a difficult test since Europe has many countries with world-class teams in top form prepared to take that award away from Spain and Italy, England (who have still never won a European Championship) and France look strong this year. The exciting part of the European Championship is that any team could possibly win. n 2004, Greece took the title in the final match against host Portugal and amazed the soccer world. Last year Turkey and Russia showed they were home to strong squads, both getting to the semi-finals round but losing to Germany and Spain respectively. Who knows, maybe this year another first champion could come away with the glory of being the best in Europe.

The Euro 2012 event is being hosted jointly by Poland and the Ukraine are hosting the games and it is reported that the European Tournament is already having a great impact on the economies of both areas. The last European Cup was also jointly hosted by the countries of Austria and Switzerland to great acclaim as Spain beat Germany one to zero to take their second championship (their first was in 1964).

Tickets have gone on sale and analysts believe, with all the buzz surrounding the games and the superstars currently in the game today, that this may be the most lucrative European Championship ever. Major matches are selling out with fans hoping to support their countries to amazing semi-final and final matches.

What Appears To Be Wrong With The England National Team?

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

As England departed these shores for South Africa a few weeks ago, there was much anticipation that finally, the team may bring the trophy home. Having said that, that dream was destroyed in no uncertain terms by the old enemy Germany in Bloemfontein as England crashed out of the tournament losing 4-1. How may perhaps such an experienced team who qualified so easily fail to perform? Not surprisingly, the English media has put together no dearth of scape goats and factors for what was England’s worst defeat at a World Cup. There has been ample talk about the Italian manager, formations and more but the issues are far deeper.

Since its formation in 1992, the Premier League has achieved terrific success as a global brand. The price of this success has been felt by English football. Higher TV cash has forced wages higher and higher. Subsequently this has meant there has been an increasing divide amongst club and country. Teams pay their players a large amount of money and are more and more unwilling to let their footballers play for their countries.

Consequently, players get hugely rewarded by Premier League clubs to the extent that success is categorized by signing money-spinning contracts as a substitute for anything they accomplish on the pitch. Mediocre footballers who rarely turn out for their teams are still millionaires and as these players put money ahead of playing games at club level, there is certainly little doubt they don’t have the mental strength or hunger to play international football.

Traditionally, there was always a regional reserve league which ensured young players from lower league clubs may perhaps be guaranteed playing against decent reserve teams from bigger teams like Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs and Man Utd. Of course, in recent years, the Premiership has changed consequently they will only play against other Premier League reserve teams. This means that Championship reserve teams no longer get to play against Premier League sides. For teams like Ipswich Town, it means their reserve team now plays against Stevenage as opposed to Tottenham Hotspurs and this drop in standard in opposition without doubt has a negative effect on the footballing education of young players.

With a great deal of wealth on the line, everything is tailored for Premiership survival. Clubs spend large sums of money securing supposedly top-quality foreign managers and footballers in a bid to preserve their EPL status. The ambition of promoted teams to the Premier League extends no further than finished 4th bottom. The Premiership cash bonanza means that Premier League clubs can provide £1-2m for young players at lower league teams. The footballers are happy to move and secure their financial futures but it could quite possibly also signal the end of their careers. The young Crystal Palace star signed for Tottenham but rarely made an appearance and was last heard of on loan at Brentford, a league lower than when he was at Palace. From a football perspective, Bostock would have been best served staying at Palace and learning the game. How many more young footballers careers are cut down like this chasing the money as an alternative to playing the game?  It’s difficult to blame the young players for taking the money.

Addititionally there is the widely used accusation that clubs take part in too many matches in England and a growing number of managers want a winter break. Of course, players don’t look to be tired as asked to fly off to the United States or Far East on pre-season excursions. Or how about England’s friendly fixture next June away in Thailand?

There are so numerous ready made excuses for failure that players are ready to accept. They live a life well away from real life with their mansions, sports cars and trophy wives. Basically, there is not enough hunger or desire.

The fixture in Thailand also illustrates another concern. Together with the Premier League being a global brand name, so are the England team. Fans want to observe the big Premier League stars play for England and in friendly matches like this, those stars will be expected, if not contracted, to turn out.  Bear in mind, it is not the case that the leading 11 players make the recommended team. Too a large number of footballers are in the team based on track record rather than performances. Young footballers should be promoted into the senior squad sooner.

For the imminent Euro 2012 campaign, England should dispense with the services of all footballers aged 30 or over. None of them have performed in South Africa thus why should the manager persist with them. It would be more practical to promote younger footballers who may still be hungry for success. All the same, while the worshiping of the Premier League carries on, things are not going to get better anytime immediately.

Questions Surrounding The Playing Surface At The New Wembley

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

The old Wembley Stadium was opened up in 1923 and had a reputable name for developing one of the best playing surfaces in the UK. Its wide open spaces would drain the strength from the legs of even the fittest players. As soon as the Empire Stadium at long last closed its doors in 2000, the impressive pitch was torn up along with the entire arena.

England fans had to wait 7 more years until eventually the new Wembley Stadium opened its doors. The new 90,000 seater stadium was categorised by UEFA as a 5* Elite Arena and is the second largest in Europe after the Camp Nou in Barcelona. The initial full international was against Brazil on 1st June 2007.

The development of the arena was overdue and way over budget yet the difficulties did not finish there. Operational issues like the defective escalators on match days were encountered but there is an on-going problem that thus far has not be adequately dealt with – the playing surface.

Playing surfaces at new stadia in general require adequate time to settle down but at Wembley the playing surface is a headache and is probably one of the worst around. It cuts up far too easily and players slip over too often. In a recent FA Cup semi final, at least one of the goals was because of a defender slipping at a vital second as the pitch gave way. By the close of the 2009/2010 season, the playing surface had been relaid 10 times at an expense of one million pounds and the stadium hadn’t even been in operation for 3 years.

The truth is, relaying the playing surface every 3 months just isn’t the resolution. The plan of the stadium is the reason why the natural conditions of light and wind can’t get to the pitch to entice the playing surface to grow. Some stadia such as the one in Gelsenkirchen in Germany is on rollers so between matches, the entire pitch is moved out of the stadium. Other stadia have a good amount of ventilation in the stands to allow the wind to flow and it is possible to use artificial lights to encourage the playing surface to develop.

Sadly, there are still issues and a fix needs to be worked out. In September 2010, England start off their qualification for Euro 2012 and they are definitely the best team in their group. The last thing England don’t need, is the other team aided by a poor quality Wembley pitch. The matches at Wembley are supposed to give England home advantage.
